A guide to becoming the Creative Director of your Life
If there is one thing you need to know about me, I am very creative person. I usually have a creative project or two (or ten…) on the go at any given time.
I kicked off 2025 by moving back to Toronto, graduating post-secondary with an Honours Bachelor of Public Relations. I feel like it took me a year to get my creative spark back.
But now I am breaking out my glue gun, scissors and new ideas and am eager to jump into a new lifestyle of creativity.
Define your Creative Identity
To be your own creative director, you need to have a creative identity.
It shouldn’t put yourself into a box, like locking yourself into an aesthetic or only choosing one hobby. It’s about knowing what excites you, what your are drawn to and how you want your life to feel. Think of it as designing a brand, then making it more human.
Define your creative role: are you a maker or a collector of ideas?
Identify your visual language: Colours, textures, materials, fonts, spaces you love.
Choose your creative values: Fun over perfection, handmade over mass-produced, documenting over performing.
Let your creative identity show up everywhere: In how you host, organize, customize, and create.
Creative Projects
I’ve put together a list of ideas to help you take this more creative approach to life. An archive of projects to spark your creative energy and you help you create for fun.
Journaling
Journaling is have a its moment right now. Especially the DIY Louise Carmen or Paper Republic inspired leather journal covers. Journaling might feel a bit intimidating to get started with but the best advice that I can offer is to just start.
Buy a notebook, make time, write about anything
Then, write about anything that you want to write about. The great thing about journaling is that there are no rules. You can write about your day, write about your feelings, you can add photos or “junk” and mementos.
I personally have a few journals on the go:
a daily journal where I write about my day and add photos to document my day
a journal of lists; to do lists, grocery lists, idea lists, etc
a scrapbook for more of my favourite photos
Journaling a private practice. There is no pressure to make it public.
Customize everything
Ever since brands sent influencers the bedazzled beauty products, I have been obsessed with customizing everything that I own. I want everything in my space to feel uniquely me. Here are some of the ideas that I have:
Bedazzled beauty products
Add foil details to your notebook and journal covers
Design your own planner notepads
Embroider your makeup bags
Paint pottery to use in your kitchen
Custom calendar with photos from the year
Plan some Parties
Hosting is very in right now! Themed dinner parties, apartment cafe’s, monthly gathering.
My number one tip is to set a date and invite everyone before planning the event. It removes the opportunity to procrastinate.
I am currently working freelance as an event coordinator (my dream job) but I haven’t planned anything for myself in a while, that’s something I want to do this year.
Planning a party forces you to be creative. You need to plan a menu, the atmosphere, the decor, plan the experience, decorate and make invitations. It’s the perfect project if you are looking for something a bit more longterm!
Yearly Recap Magazine
Turn your year into a magazine!
An idea that I have been obsessed with for years but haven’t done yet. The concept is simple; you design spreads using photos from the year — milestones, trips, things you made and moments you loved.
I want to start making a recap magazine every quarter and then display them as coffee table books in my future home.
Make more things
This year I want to make more things that I can use in my day to day life. Mostly so that when someone asks me about it I can say “Thanks, I made it!”.
Here are some of my ideas:
Knit scarves
Custom candle with a signature scent
Custom match boxes for guests
Totebags
Bag charms and keychains
Elevate your digital experience
We all spend way to much time on our phones and computers. And although we are all actively trying to lower our screen time, we should at least make the time we have to spend staring at a computer enjoyable, right?
Here are some fun ways to improve you digital experience:
Customize and change your wallpapers
Colour code your folders or disguise them as something else
Create a “resource library” of all your favourite websites
Do a digital declutter on a weekly and monthly basis
Start a Common Place Journal
This type of journaling deserves its own moment.
A common place journal is a notebook where you collect quotes, ideas, facts, recipes, poems — anything worth remembering. Essentially you are creating your own personal database of everyday life.
Mini Projects
Little things that you can do to kickstart creativity or keep creative between projects.
Make a new playlist
Start a Pinterest board
Make a magazine spread about your life
Redesign your resume or update your portfolio
Design branding and a colour pallet for your life
Create a signature drink
Design a menu for your weekly meal plan
